Fishing FAQ
Activities Home

The Eastern Brook or Speckled Trout is the king of our waters and is the fish that most of our guests seek. Camp rarely disappoints; in 1980, the State Record Brook Trout was caught only a mile from Island Pond.

The smaller ponds around Camp contain only naturally reproduced, native trout and are designated as "fly-fishing only." These include Island, Denny, Galilee, North, Stink, Upper, South Black, and North Black Pond. The larger ponds are suitable for trolling. Of these, Pushineer, Gardner, Black, and Deboullie contain the rare Blueback Trout. Togue Pond contains Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout.

There are also a variety of options for the fisherman who wants to venture a little farther from Camp, or who wants a different fishing experience than we offer at our home ponds. For folks interested in brook fishing, Big Brook, Rocky Brook, the Red River, and the Allagash River are all within an hour of Camp.

For those who just want a change of scenery, Moccasin Pond and Ferguson Pond are also within an hour of Camp.

Fishing Licenses are required for all members of your party who wish to fish while at Red River. Fishing licenses are not available at Camp but can be purchased at various places in Maine, including Coffins General Store in Portage. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife also offers fishing licenses online, which you can purchase prior to your trip at https://www.informe.org/moses/. (You may also be interested in visiting their main website at http://mefishwildlife.com.)

Guide service is available and must be reserved at the time of your reservation. A guide's knowledge of the area's insect hatches, ponds, weather, and lore can help some of our guests enjoy their experience at Camp even more. Some guides also offer instruction in fly-fishing and other wilderness skills. If you think a guide might be helpful for your group, please ask. We can recommend a few who know the area well.
